There are numerous accessories that you can use to enhance the motorhoming experience. Here we attempt to explain these add-ons that may be of interest to you - Satellite TV, GPS, Cycle Racks, Motorhome Awnings, Solar Panels, Reversing Cameras and Motorhome Generators. But don't be overawed at the amount of accessories for recreational vehicles there are - the good news is that you don't have to purchase all of these in one go. Indeed many of these items may not be required. Most experienced motorhomers will accumulate what they require over many years. Sometimes it takes that long to figure out the items you will utilise and those you will not. See below further information on motorhome accessories and links to suggested suppliers of each item.

Satellite TV and Receivers If you like your TV on the move you could try your TV connected to a regular aerial type device, which will deliver terrestrial services. However the picture quality can vary. If down in a dip or near trees, chances are you will experience "ghosting". A better solution is a small to medium sized satellite dish, which can be purchased quite reasonably. Two points to note, firstly you will need to clamp the dish in place on arrival at your site and secondly you will require a method of finding/pointing to the required satellite. Recently "Satellite Finders" have made this job easier at an affordable price.

GPS GPS or Satellite Navigation is a must for the travelling motorhomer. These devices vary from a simple navigational tool to a vacation organiser and recorder. The choice is yours as to how much functionality you require. Important considerations include - POI (Points Of Interest) i.e. a device that highlights nearest filling stations, campsites, cash machines etc. Navigational features should include consideration for the fact that you are driving a large vehicle and should help you avoid narrow roads, low overhead bridges etc. |

Cycle Racks Most motorhomers use bicycles either as a necessity, to get to the local shop, or for pleasure. Most motorhomes do not have a storage space large enough to store bicycles. The easy solution is to fit a bicycle rack to the rear of your motorhome. Usually bolted to the rear wall of your motorhome, the standard bicycle rack can store up to 4 cycles. You can even get an accessory for your accessory - a cycle rack cover to protect your cycles from the elements. |

Motorhome Awnings An awning is a tent like space that you attach to your motorhome. Most awnings are fixed and secured to your home, but there are also stand-alone awnings that fix loosely to your motorhome and allow you to drive away and re-connect at a later stage. The biggest advantage of an awning is the creation of extra living space. Some motorhomers refer to an awning as the roof only device that unwinds from the roof of a motorhome, to provide a shaded area. Good quality awnings may also be used as a sleeping area. |

Solar Panels and Generators Your motorhomes living space is powered by your leisure battery. Your leisure battery is re-charged by either driving or by being hooked-up to an electric source. However if neither of these options is available to you, there are to accessories that can assist. Solar panels can be mounted on the roof of your motorhome and can trickle charge your leisure battery. Obviously the climate will influence the effectiveness of solar panels. An alternative is a petrol / diesel powered generator, which can directly power the electrical components of your motorhome. Some campsites do not allow generators as they are sometimes too noisy. |

Reversing Cameras One fundamental flaw in the design of the motorhome is the lack of vision when reversing. The simple solution is to mount a reversing camera to the top rear of your motorhome. On the dashboard is a terminal screen that displays the space into which the vehicle is reversing. A reversing camera is an essential accessory for the safety of your vehicle. |

Other Motorhome Accessories There are countless other motorhome accesories that can add the efficiency, enjoyability, safety and security of your vehicle. In terms of security you may choose to install an alarm, wheel lock, tracking device, immobiliser etc to protect your investment. For safety there are options like high visibility jackets, warning triangles, first aid kits, fire extinguishers etc to make the vehicle safer to inhabit for you and your loved ones. |
