Motorhome Awnings
Add extra space to your motorhome One of the most common faults people find with a motorhome holiday is the lack of living space. This is not a problem if you are using your motorhome as a sleeping place only or if you are always outdoors. But, invariably, on longer holidays you do spend periods of time in the van, when you are not just sleeping. The solution is the motorhome awning. Awnings come in three general types - safari rooms, attached and stand alone models. The traditional motorhome awning is one that attaches to your leisure vehicle. The attaching can be done in two ways - either by a clipping mechanism that attached to the standard rail of a motorhome or caravan or by strings and straps which you use to tie the awning to your vehicle. The stand alone awning is one that is errected using bars and guys ropes and pitched separate from the motorhome, which can be driven (carefully) next to the awning and parked beside it. It usually comes with flaps that can be lightly pinned to the motorhome to provide an all round seal between awning and motorhome. Finally the "Safari Room" is the common name given to a three walled device that can be attached to an already existing roof that extends out of some motorhomes. This is a particularly clever design that allows use of the existing roof to create an extra room. The extra room created by an awning does restrict the ability to move the motorhome however and as such is particularly useful on longer stays. Depending on the type and model of motorhome awning, it may require from no time at all to a long time, to remove the awning or awning connection, to allow the vehicle to be driven away. Awnings vary in their wall design - some are heavy old fashioned army tent canvas and others are a much lighter nylon based substance. Many will offer flexible design allowing doors, windows and wall removal abilities. It's important that you base your purchase on the type of climate and group size that you will normally encounter. Also consider the style of camping you do. For example, do you tend to park up the vehicle for days on end or do you tend to move your vehicle off it's campsite pitch on a daily basis. |
