VW Camper Types

Type 2 (aka Split Screen) 1950 - 1967
The original VW Camper has it's origins in the wartime VW factory in Wolfsberg, Germany, which was at the time manufacturing VW Beetles. Ben Pon, an importer of VW Beetles to Holland, came up with the original design of the Beetle based van. Pon's original idea was not for a leisure vehicle, but rather a utility vehicle and indeed the early Split Screens functioned as everything from Ambulances to Grocery delivery vans. Type 2 (aka Bay Window) 1967 - 1980

Type 3 (aka T25 / Vanagon) 1980 - 1991
The T3 platform was introduced in 1980, and was one of the last new Volkswagen platforms to use an air-cooled engine. Read more on the Vanagon.

Type 4 1991 - 2003
The rear engine Type 3 VW was replaced by the modern VW T4 Motorhome. With a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines, the major conversion factories soon took to building a new generation of VW Motorhomes.

Type 5 2003 -
The fifth generation of the VW Motorhome era is the highly successful VW T5. Selling over 1 million units, it is primarily sold in Europe and is a highly sought after base van for conversion.
